Darn Mosquito’s

Did you know the word Mosquito is Spanish for “little fly”.   There are about 170 different kind of mosquitos in the United States and 3000 throughout the world.  Nothing is more annoying than that buzz of a mosquito you hear while trying to enjoy the outdoor.

Mosquito’s can develop from egg to adult in about 10 to 14 days.  Believe it or not mosquito’s actually do not bite, but they feed.  Adult male mosquitos only feed on plant nectars, it is the female mosquito that “bites” or feeds on plant nectars and blood.

The female mosquitoes need the blood protein to reproduce.  To get the blood they pierce our skin with their proboscis and suck the blood out.  Mosquitoes are busiest at night and will fly up to 14 miles for a blood meal.  They find us by our body heat and the carbon dioxide we exhale.

Mosquito’s breed in stagnant water or soft moist soil, or swampy areas.  You can find them breeding in children’s swimming wadding pools, old tires, bird baths, and storm drains.  These little pests are considered the most deadly animals in the world and contribute to close to a million deaths per year, according to an article in Smithsonian magazine.

What can you do to help with Prevention?

It is important that you replace any standing or stagnant water at least once a week in your yard.  Also remove any trash or garbage that that is near standing water.  If your sleeping outside or going camping use mosquito netting and use fine mesh screens for your porches.

Otherwise you can use any product or repellant containing  DEET.  DEET does not kill the Mosquito but they don’t like it and they will go elsewhere to feed.  Also, some people have great success with Citronella candles or Thermo Cell mosquito repellants.

If you're concerned about using DEET on yourself or young children, you can also use products containing essential oils, known as botanicals. Several botanical repellants are registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), including Repel, a product that contains oil of lemon-eucalyptus.
